Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel – German general and military theorist (Born 15 November 1891 – 14 October 1944). Serving as a field marshal in Nazi Germany during World War II. Wehrmacht (Defence Force) serving in the army of Imperial Germany and Reichswehr of the Weimar Republic.

In World War I Rommel was a highly decorated officer and was awarded the Pour le Mérite for his actions on the Italian Front.  In 1937 drawing on his experiences from World War Rommel published his classic book on Infantry assaults and military tactics.  He later distinguished himself In World War II as the commander of the 7th Panzer Division. After his leadership of German and Italian forces during the North African campaign, he gained the reputation of being one of the most talented tank commanders of his time earning himself the nickname Der Wüstenfuchs, (The Desert Fox)

Among his British adversaries, he had a popularity for chivalry. His favorite saying was “war without hate”  which was used to describe the North African campaign.  In June 1944, he later commanded the German forces opposing the Allied invasion of Normandy.
